A true understanding
of what censorship is all about is often neatly swept under the carpet
by the noble appeal to: protect our children; secure the national interest;
preserve our Christian (or Judaic or Islamic, or Hindu, or ..) way of
life; or any other laudable cause that serves the interests of the censor..
Well, of course we
need to protect the children and preserve our way of life ... but WE
must protect them, not government bureaucracies, nor the fanatics who
wish to impose their narrow minded beliefs upon all of humanity.
Government restrictions
on freedom are potentially the most sinister form of censorship as they
can result in tremendous power with little or no accountability. The initial
reason for curbs on freedom are often sound and appropriate to the circumstances,
but statutes stay on the books to be used on an unsuspecting public later.
If we abdicate these responsibilities and depend upon others to look after
what we - or our children, for that matter - may see, hear or experience;
the less freedom we will have, and our children will grow up to be nothing
more than puppets.
